Lithuania and Poland Are Preparing to Evacuate Their Populations in Case of an Attack by Russia — The Telegraph

Lithuania and Poland are developing plans to evacuate their populations in the event of a possible Russian attack. Particular attention is being paid to the Suwalki Corridor—an approximately 100-kilometer stretch of the Lithuanian-Polish border between Belarus and the Kaliningrad Oblast of the Russian Federation.

This area is considered one of the potentially vulnerable sections of NATO’s eastern flank. Against the backdrop of warnings from Western intelligence agencies about a possible further escalation by Russia, Vilnius and Warsaw are already working on practical procedures in case of a military scenario.

The countries are coordinating logistics, infrastructure, and routes that could be used for evacuation through the Suwalki Corridor. They are also exploring the possibility of evacuating the populations of Latvia and Estonia if necessary.

About 20 Polish personnel have arrived in Lithuania to participate in the relevant exercises. In total, the exercises involve about 3,000 Lithuanian officials and 1,000 volunteers.

According to Vilmantas Vitkauskas, director of Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Center, Vilnius and Warsaw are also working on a bilateral agreement that is intended to serve as the basis for implementing these plans.
