Lula retains lead in poll ahead of Brazil election
In Brazil, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva retains the lead in voting intentions ahead of the presidential election, but Senator Flávio Bolsonaro is narrowing the gap. According to a Datafolha poll reported by Anadolu Agency, 39% of respondents are ready to vote for Lula in the first round, compared with 35% for Bolsonaro.
The gap between the candidates has narrowed
The difference between the candidates stands at four percentage points and is smaller than in previous polls. In a possible second round, Lula receives 46%, while Flávio Bolsonaro receives 44%. This result is within the survey's margin of error, which is two percentage points.
The poll was conducted on September 8–10 among 2,002 voters in 125 municipalities across the country. Lula has higher support among lower-income voters, women and Catholics. Flávio Bolsonaro leads his opponent among higher-income voters, men and evangelical Christians.

Support in the northeast
The incumbent president retains his biggest advantage in northeastern Brazil: there, Lula leads Bolsonaro by 53% to 25%. Security, the economy and the political legacy of former President Jair Bolsonaro are named among the key issues of the final weeks of the campaign.
Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of the former head of state, became Lula's main rival after receiving his father's political support. The first round of Brazil's presidential election is scheduled for October 4. If no candidate wins more than half of the valid votes, a second round will be held on October 25.
