Nobel laureate wants to help earthquake victims in Venezuela — Reuters

Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado has expressed her determination to return to her homeland to help address the aftermath of the massive earthquakes

The opposition leader emphasized that she is “ready to do whatever it takes” to enter the country and join the effort to rebuild the nation after the natural disaster.

Machado is currently in Panama and accuses the current Venezuelan government of systematically blocking her entry.

In a video message posted on social media platform X, she assured citizens that she “will be in Venezuela to help coordinate and encourage citizens’ efforts during this emergency.”

The politician, who has been outside the country since December 2025 after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, has not disclosed details of her plan to return.

Meanwhile, according to administration officials, the U.S. government is currently focused on providing humanitarian aid to earthquake victims and is refraining from making official comments regarding assistance with Machado’s border crossing.

It is known that Machado has already begun consultations with representatives of the White House, the State Department, and the U.S. Congress to seek support for her initiative.

However, her intentions have caused some tension in Washington, where the opposition leader has been urged to postpone her trip to Venezuela.

The situation is escalating against the backdrop of ongoing political instability following the 2024 elections.

U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed doubts about Machado’s ability to lead the country in the near future, expressing his preference for supporting Delcy Rodríguez.

This was reported by Reuters.
