Mátyás set conditions for Ukraine to begin EU accession talks — Bloomberg

Hungary’s incoming Prime Minister Péter Magyar has stated that expanding the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine is a prerequisite for supporting the start of negotiations on Kyiv’s accession to the EU.

Bloomberg reports this.

According to the agency’s sources, this issue was discussed during Magyar’s meeting with European Council President Antonio Costa in Brussels.

It is noted that Magyar’s position largely echoes the demands previously put forward by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Specifically, this concerns ensuring the rights of the Hungarian community in Ukraine, including access to education in the Hungarian language.

Although Mádár himself described the talks as constructive, sources point to a less positive tone compared to his meeting with the President of the European Commission earlier that day.

The EU expects Hungary’s new government to support the opening of negotiations with Ukraine, but Madyar’s hardline stance could complicate this process and cause disappointment in both Kyiv and Brussels.

Hungary’s nearly former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced his resignation from his parliamentary seat. However, he expressed his willingness to continue leading the Fidesz party if the party congress supports his candidacy.

Recall that the Hungarian government has accused the social media platform Facebook of political bias against Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Despite Orbán’s ban, Ukraine will receive 90 billion: IPA President Galina Heylo on the EU’s plans to finance the country.
