Max Tegmark said there is insufficient regulation of AI in the U.S.

Max Tegmark, a professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and founder of the Future of Life Institute, stated in an interview with Al Jazeera English’s *The Bottom Line* program that, in his opinion, artificial intelligence in the U.S. is regulated less strictly than the production of sandwiches.

Tegmark believes that the greatest danger to humanity could come from a machine capable of outsmarting the entire human race. He criticized the approach of governments and tech companies, which, he said, are competing to replace human labor rather than focusing on solving people’s problems.

The scientist also stated that this race aims to concentrate money and power in the hands of a very small number of people. The interview with Tegmark was conducted by host Steve Clemons.

Al Jazeera English notes that a series of suicides and murders committed by people who interacted with AI-based chatbots has led to increased opposition to Silicon Valley’s lobbying stance against regulating the technology.
