Malaga has banned new tourist accommodations
Malaga, Spain, is imposing a three-year ban on the construction of new hotels and tourist apartments in residential areas. The new rules are set to take effect as early as the end of July 2026.
City officials cite the rapid increase in tourist accommodations, which is driving up rental prices and forcing local residents to leave their neighborhoods more and more often. From now on, tourist apartments will officially be considered incompatible with residential development.
However, the restrictions will not apply to projects that have already submitted applications for building permits. In addition, the city will step up oversight of the conversion of commercial spaces into tourist accommodations.
