Estonia to launch mushroom express in September

Estonia’s State Forest Management Centre, RMK, together with passenger rail operator Elron, will launch a mushroom express in September. Passengers will be able to travel by train to the forest to pick mushrooms under the guidance of specialists.

Preparing for the trip

According to ERR News, RMK nature information specialist Liis Soonik said that such trips encourage people to spend time in nature. At the same time, she stressed that it is impossible to guarantee a successful mushroom harvest in advance, even in a place where they have previously been found regularly.

Soonik advised passengers to study the map in advance and use the RMK app. It marks forests and the direction of travel from the railway station. According to her, the train will take people to a stop, but the success of mushroom hunting will largely depend on their preparation.

Advice for mushroom pickers

Those heading into the forest are advised to wear bright clothing, especially if they rarely visit forests or are not confident in their navigation skills. It is also worth taking a white bucket that can be seen from a distance, ensuring comfortable footwear and choosing rubber boots in autumn to protect against snakes.

The specialist also advised fully charging a phone and informing relatives or friends exactly where a person is going and which train they are taking. RMK analysed forest types in different areas to approximately determine which mushrooms may grow there. According to Soonik, dry pine forests, as well as the coast, may be suitable for finding certain species of milk caps.
