Sheinbaum calls Sinaloa governor’s brief return imprudent
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized the brief return of Rubén Rocha Moya to his post as governor of Sinaloa state after several months away from office. As Mexico News Daily reports, he resumed his duties on August 21, and on August 23 again requested leave from office. The Sinaloa Congress unanimously approved it.
According to the publication, Rocha Moya is under investigation in the United States on suspicion of possible collusion with the Sinaloa cartel. Sheinbaum said she learned of his return from a social media post and was not aware of these plans in advance. She called the decision imprudent, while describing the governor’s renewed request as the best option for the state.
Cases involving Morena officials
Sheinbaum also commented on the situation surrounding Senator Enrique Inzunza. According to Mexico News Daily, U.S. prosecutors accuse him and nine other officials linked to Sinaloa state of ties to drug trafficking. The president said the same approach should be applied to all ten cases. On Wednesday, Inzunza left the Morena Senate caucus but remained a senator.

Mexican security forces also conducted a coordinated operation against the Jalisco New Generation Cartel in the states of Hidalgo, Jalisco and Michoacán. Between August 21 and 23, law enforcement detained 20 people, searched 36 properties and seized weapons, fentanyl, methamphetamine, 113 vehicles, a drone signal-jamming device and exotic animals. Together with a previous operation in Michoacán, 32 suspected members of the group were detained over the week.
Investment and informal employment
In the first half of 2026, foreign direct investment in Mexico totaled $34.968 billion, 2.1% more than a year earlier. Manufacturing accounted for 38.6% of investment, while the United States remained the largest source, with $16.871 billion.
Mexico’s exports reached a record $81.4 billion in July, rising 43.7% year on year. At the same time, July’s employment growth was driven by the informal sector: the number of informal jobs increased by more than 1.08 million, while formal employment declined by more than 412,000. The share of informal employment reached 56.2%, its highest level since December 2021.
