A widespread power outage occurred in Estonia due to a malfunction at a substation in Tartu

On the evening of June 9, thousands of customers in southern Estonia were left without power due to an emergency outage at one of the region’s key substations.

The outage most severely affected the city of Tartu and surrounding areas. Due to the power outage, traffic lights in the city temporarily stopped working, and residents in various neighborhoods reported sudden power outages.

The power grid operator Elering reported that the incident was caused by a malfunction during scheduled maintenance work on the grid.

According to the company, a short circuit at the substation occurred at 5:07 p.m. As a result, the facility temporarily ceased operations, causing a large-scale power outage in Tartu and the surrounding areas.

Restoration work began just a few minutes after the accident. The substation’s operations were restored at 5:27 p.m., after which power began to be restored to consumers.

Thus, the power outage lasted about half an hour.
