The U.S.-Iran memorandum calls for the easing of sanctions and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, according to Axios
The United States and Iran have agreed on the text of a preliminary agreement that could serve as the basis for resolving the long-standing conflict between the two countries and easing tensions in the Middle East.
The parties have already agreed on a draft document titled “Memorandum of Understanding.”
The signing is expected to take place in the coming days following final approval by the leadership of both countries.
At the same time, the agreement is currently in the final approval stage.
According to the draft document, Iran commits to not developing nuclear weapons, the issue of enriched uranium stockpiles must be resolved, and the U.S. plans a phased easing of sanctions.
It also provides for a 60-day extension of the ceasefire, particularly in Lebanon, the unrestricted opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the restoration of pre-war shipping volumes within 30 days of the agreement’s signing.
According to sources, an option is being considered for UN inspectors to monitor Iran’s uranium, allowing them to oversee its movement and storage.
The easing of U.S. sanctions will depend on the extent to which Iran fulfills its commitments and demonstrates “good faith” during subsequent negotiations.
The negotiations have raised concerns in Israel. According to sources, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was not fully informed about the progress of the agreements and reached out to allies in the U.S. for details.
Diplomats confirm that the text of the document has already been agreed upon at the negotiating team level, but it requires final approval at the highest political level.
According to journalists, the draft has received high-level support in Iran, and the final decision is to be made by Iran’s Supreme Leader. The agreement may be given the working title “Islamabad Agreement.”
It is also reported that the U.S. is preparing for possible participation in the signing ceremony, which may take place in Europe.
