Eight foreigners were killed in two traffic accidents in Hungary

On Friday morning, two consecutive traffic accidents occurred near the Hungarian city of Győr. First, a truck collided with construction equipment, and later a minibus was involved in another accident with a truck. Eight foreign nationals were killed as a result of these incidents.

The first accident on the M1 highway occurred around 4:30 a.m. A truck collided with a construction vehicle, after which the vehicle caught fire, and the driver died at the scene. 

Later on that stretch of road, a minibus collided with a truck that had stopped due to the previous accident. There were nine people in the minibus; seven of them died at the scene, and two were injured.

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar responded to the accidents on Facebook. He stated that all the victims were foreign nationals and expressed his condolences to their families.

"On behalf of the government, I extend my sincere condolences to the families of the eight foreign nationals who died in the accident that occurred at dawn on the M1 highway. We wish the injured a speedy recovery," the prime minister wrote.

Police told the news site 24.hu that the minibus and truck involved in the two accidents had Moldovan license plates.

The foreign ministers of Ukraine and Hungary, Andriy Sibiga and Anita Orbán, held their first in-person meeting on May 22. During the talks in Helsingborg, the parties agreed to hold a second round of expert-level consultations next week to further discuss bilateral issues.
