New York Mayor Mamdani still lacks federal security clearance
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has led the city for more than eight and a half months, still does not have federal security clearance, reports Anadolu Agency, citing media outlets. According to Mamdani, the delay limits his ability to receive briefings containing classified information on terrorism and other threats to New York, home to nearly 8.5 million people.
The procedure is ongoing
During a press conference, Mamdani described the timeframe for obtaining the clearance as typical and said the process is still ongoing. According to him, several senior city administration officials already have such clearance. The New York Police Department also regularly briefs him on intelligence investigations that do not contain federally classified information.
Experience of previous mayors
Mamdani is not the first New York City mayor to face issues with federal clearance. According to the New York Post, former Mayor Bill de Blasio did not apply for it at the start of his first term, which began in 2014. He received full clearance a little more than a year later.

Another former New York City mayor, Eric Adams, had his federal clearance revoked after he became the first sitting city mayor to face federal criminal charges in 2024. Experts cited by the agency noted that an FBI background check for federal clearance can take up to a year for a person beginning their first term in public office.
The report emerged during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, which numerous foreign senior officials are expected to attend. According to experts, the mayor's lack of access to full classified information from the federal government could potentially delay an official response in the event of an emergency.
