At least 67 people were killed in a collapse at the Al-Zara gold mine in the city of Nuhud, Sudan. TimesLIVE reports, citing a medical group and survivors.
Search operation continues
According to eyewitnesses, the collapse occurred late on Tuesday evening. Many people are still considered missing, and the search-and-rescue operation is continuing. The medical group warned that the death toll could rise as the search continues for survivors and people who may remain trapped under the rubble.
Miner Al-Amin Suliman said that people remain trapped in the mine, which has several shafts. Another survivor, Khairal-Sayed Gabara, described the collapse as large-scale. According to him, there was no available equipment at the site needed to clear the collapsed earth and debris.

Area under Rapid Support Forces control
The area where the tragedy occurred is under the control of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. This group has been fighting the Sudanese military for more than three years.
Sudan is a major gold producer, but mine collapses in the country occur frequently because of low safety standards. Similar incidents in recent years include a 2023 collapse that killed 14 miners and a 2021 accident that claimed 38 lives.
