Merz called the change of government in Hungary a “historic event”

During a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described the victory of the leader of the Hungarian opposition party “Tisa” in Hungary’s parliamentary elections as a “historic event.”

He said this during a joint press conference with Volodymyr Zelenskyy

According to Merz, the events of April 12 in Hungary are significant not only for the country but for all of Europe.

“What the Hungarians achieved on April 12 is a historic event. Hungarians have shown Europe and the world: there is no irreversible trend toward authoritarian right-wing populism. And the pendulum has swung the other way. This is good news for all of Europe, it is good news for Germany, and it is good news for Ukraine,” the chancellor stated.

He also noted that he had congratulated the leader of the Hungarian opposition and expressed his willingness to host him on a visit to Berlin.

As a reminder, the winner of the Hungarian elections, Péter Magyar, is developing a comprehensive plan to normalize relations with the European Union following 16 years of Viktor Orbán’s rule.

Péter Magyar, whose party won the parliamentary elections in Hungary, has begun preparing a strategic plan to restore relations with Brussels.
