Merz: Putin must decide whether he is ready for talks with Zelenskyy
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the future of possible direct talks between Ukraine and Russia depends on the decision of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
According to Merz, the Ukrainian side has already taken a concrete step toward dialogue. He recalled that in early June, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reached out to Putin with a proposal to hold a face-to-face meeting to discuss ways to end the war.
The chancellor emphasized that Kyiv had set only one condition—the talks must not take place in Moscow. At the same time, the Russian dictator rejected the proposed meeting.
Now, Merz noted, it is up to Putin to decide whether he is ready to revisit this proposal and begin direct negotiations with the Ukrainian president.
