Colombian Education Minister Viviane Morales resigns
Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has accepted the resignation of Education Minister Viviane Morales. According to Colombia Reports, Morales, who had held the post since August 7—the first day of the president’s administration—cited an unexpected family situation as the reason for her decision.
New head of the ministry
In a post on social network X, de la Espriella said he had appointed Ilva Miriam Hoyos as the new education minister. The president expressed confidence that she would be an effective minister and serve Colombia with dedication, character, and conviction.
The president also called Morales his dear friend and expressed hope that she would be able to resolve her personal situation soon.

Views on education
As Colombia Reports writes, during her time in government, Morales led the government’s cultural war in education. She promised to remove what she called gender ideology from Colombian classrooms and also proposed a law that would allow churches to provide services in the public education sector.
Hoyos, who is Catholic, warned in 2016 that the peace agreement between the government of President Juan Manuel Santos and the now-defunct FARC guerrilla group promoted gender ideology. The new minister had also previously worked with Alejandro Ordóñez, Colombia’s former inspector general and the country’s current ambassador to the Organization of American States.
