Singapore minister calls for aviation-style safeguards for AI — Channel NewsAsia
In Singapore, Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo said that safeguards similar to those used in civil aviation are needed to strengthen trust in artificial intelligence. She wrote this on LinkedIn on September 17, 2026, Channel NewsAsia reports.

According to Teo, the development of the aviation industry was made possible by hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of standards and regulations intended to ensure safety and maintain public trust.
She noted that civil aviation companies are expected to properly train staff and consistently apply protective mechanisms. In the minister’s view, AI will require similar approaches in the future, as trust is a necessary condition for the technology’s regular use.

Singapore’s measures
Teo stressed that safeguards for advanced AI models are still taking shape, while the necessary research and testing will require time. According to her, alongside deploying AI, Singapore is developing methods for testing and evaluating such systems, strengthening technical capabilities to assess advanced models, and providing organizations with practical guidance on the responsible use of the technology.
This work includes the AI Verify initiative, the Singapore AI Safety Institute, and the country’s AI governance framework documents. Singapore has also published a guide intended to help companies deploy AI agents more safely and reliably.
The minister added that countries cannot resolve AI safety issues on their own, so international cooperation is needed. In May, Singapore hosted the second International Scientific Exchange on AI Safety, attended by more than 100 participants from 13 countries. According to Teo, the outcome was the report “Singapore Consensus on Global AI Safety Research Priorities,” which identified shared areas for such research.
