The Hungarian Minister of Defense denied sending troops to Chad
Hungarian Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrownicki has denied reports that a military mission to Chad is being prepared, one that is said to be led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s son.
He made this statement on April 5, 2026, in response to widely circulated media reports. However, the publication Telex noted that as far back as October 2023, the minister himself had announced the deployment of up to 400 troops to Africa to combat terrorism and curb migration.
A new wave of discussion arose following an interview with military officer Silvestr Palinkáš, who trained alongside the prime minister’s son, Gáspár Orbán. According to him, the mission was a personal initiative of Viktor Orbán’s son, whom God allegedly commanded to save African Christians. Palinkás claims that Gáspár strategically planned the operation despite his low rank and expected half of the personnel to die.
These events are unfolding a week before the elections in Hungary, where the opposition has already accused Orbán of staging provocations on gas pipelines on the advice of Russian agents. Official Budapest has gradually toned down its rhetoric regarding the African campaign, attempting to distance itself from the prime minister’s son’s religious motives. Currently, the Hungarian government is focusing on energy security and the state of emergency, which could influence the results of the April 12 vote.
Earlier, Chad canceled an agreement with France that allowed French troops to operate on its territory and decided to strengthen ties with Russia.
Serbian intelligence services and military units neutralized a threat to blow up a critical infrastructure facility in the municipality of Kanjiža.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced the convening of an emergency meeting of the Defense Council in connection with an attempted sabotage of a gas pipeline on the territory of neighboring Serbia.
The leader of the opposition party “Tisa,” Péter Magyar, stated that the alleged foiled sabotage of the gas pipeline in Serbia is a staged operation aimed at disrupting the parliamentary elections in Hungary.
