Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov meets Araghchi and Guterres — Anadolu Agency

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, representing the aggressor state, held separate talks in New York, United States, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The meetings took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Anadolu Agency reports, citing statements by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Talks with Iran

During Lavrov and Araghchi's meeting late Thursday evening, the sides discussed current regional and international issues, focusing on the situation surrounding Iran. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that the ministers stressed the need for a diplomatic settlement of the crisis, which Moscow links to the actions of the United States and Israel.

The sides also focused on implementing bilateral agreements reached on September 1 during a meeting between the presidents of Russia and Iran in Bishkek. The presidential talks took place on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the ministers reviewed the schedule of upcoming Russian-Iranian contacts at various levels.

Conversation with the UN secretary-general

Later that evening, Lavrov met with Guterres. They discussed current issues concerning the UN's activities, including the results of Guterres's work as head of the organization.

Lavrov stated the need for a balanced reform of the UN to adapt it to the realities of a multipolar world order. He also raised the issue of broader representation in the UN Secretariat of citizens of countries that the Russian side calls the “global majority” and stressed the need for organization staff to perform their duties impartially. Lavrov arrived in New York late Tuesday evening and is due to address the UN General Assembly on Saturday.
