EU Aspides mission raises readiness level of ships in the Red Sea — Asharq Al-Awsat

The European Union's naval mission Aspides has raised the readiness level of its ships due to the deteriorating situation in the southern Red Sea. This was stated by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, Asharq Al-Awsat reports, citing Reuters.

Kallas also said that she discussed diplomatic efforts to end hostilities in Yemen and restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.

In a post on X, she called the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia unacceptable and said they harm the global economy. According to her, Europe is helping protect maritime traffic in the Red Sea from Houthi attacks.

Fighting near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait

Meanwhile, Yemen's government forces are repelling Houthi attempts to seize high ground east of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and west of the city of Taiz, according to the publication. The group is said to be seeking to strengthen its positions around the strait, Perim Island and the western coast by capturing mountainous areas.

A military source in the command of the Taiz military axis said that 30 Houthis were killed and more than 60 others were wounded during the clashes. According to him, six combat vehicles and two tanks were also destroyed.
