Youth orchestra to perform at UN event in New York — Jerusalem Post

The youth division of the Jerusalem Orchestra East & West — TJO Youth-Galilee — is set to perform in New York, United States, at an event marking the opening of the annual session of the UN General Assembly. The ensemble, led by Maestro Tom Cohen, is expected to be the only musical act at the event.

The ensemble includes musicians aged 14 to 23 — Jews, Muslims, Christians and Druze from different communities in Galilee. The delegation arrived in New York for a series of performances.

According to the Jerusalem Post, a Jewish businessman and philanthropist invited the youth ensemble to New York to demonstrate how musicians from different backgrounds can unite through music.

Performance program

Before taking the UN stage, the musicians held an informal jam session in a New York rehearsal room with Israeli singer-songwriter David Broza. They performed compositions from Eastern and Western musical traditions.

At the event, the ensemble is set to present a program intended to unite different cultures. It includes Zohar Argov's “Yam Shel Dmaot” (“Sea of Tears”), Abdel Wahab's “Khayy Khay,” and Leonard Cohen's “Hallelujah,” which the musicians plan to use to conclude their performance.
