A poacher with a catch worth over 1 million hryvnia was apprehended in the Khmelnytskyi region

In the village of Horbasiv, Letychiv Community, Khmelnytskyi Oblast, law enforcement officers caught a man illegally fishing with nets.

According to preliminary estimates, the poacher caused the state losses of over 1 million hryvnias. The man faces up to three years of restricted freedom for the illegal harvest of aquatic biological resources.

According to the investigation, the suspect was fishing on the evening of August 25 on the Southern Bug River. He managed to catch 665 fish, including roach, perch, pikeperch, carp, and bream. The offender turned out to be a 42-year-old local resident. His catch, boat, and a net approximately 200 meters long were seized.

According to preliminary estimates, the amount of damage caused to the state exceeds 1 million hryvnias.

The police have opened a criminal case under Part 1 of Article 249 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (illegal engagement in fishing, hunting, or other water-based extractive industries, resulting in significant damage). The penalty under this article provides for a fine ranging from 17,000 to 51,000 hryvnias, probation for up to three years, or restricted liberty for the same period.

This was reported on Wednesday, August 26, by the Khmelnytskyi Regional Police press service.
