Cyprus has 11.5 primary school pupils per teacher
In Cyprus’s primary schools, 60,596 pupils were enrolled in 2024, with an average of 11.5 pupils per teacher. This figure is below the European Union average, Cyprus Mail reports, citing Eurostat data.
Comparison with the EU
In EU countries, the average number of primary school pupils per teacher was 13.3 in 2024. By comparison, in 2014 the figure in the European Union was 13.6 pupils per teacher.
Only Malta, which had 27,537 primary school pupils, and Luxembourg, with 43,020 pupils, had fewer pupils than Cyprus. The number of pupils in countries depends on population size, demographic structure, the age at which primary education begins and compulsory schooling rules.

Primary education data
Overall, 23.2 million pupils were enrolled in primary education in the EU in 2024. This was 0.2%, or 35,153 pupils, fewer than a year earlier. At the same time, compared with 2014, the number of pupils increased by 2.9%, or 659,086 people.
France had the largest number of primary school pupils in 2024, at 4.1 million. It was followed by Germany with 3.3 million, Spain with 2.8 million and Italy with 2.6 million pupils. Since 2014, the number of pupils has increased in 15 EU countries and decreased in 11 countries for which data are available.
Eurostat released the statistics for International Literacy Day. The agency noted that primary education programmes are generally intended to provide basic reading, writing and mathematics skills.
