Environmental assessment of project in Trozena to be discussed in Cyprus — Cyprus Mail
A meeting on the special environmental assessment of a development project in the area of the abandoned village of Trozena will be held in Limassol, Cyprus, on September 30. The discussion was initiated by the Arsos community council, Cyprus Mail reports.
Trozena is located in the environmentally sensitive Hapotami Special Area of Conservation, which is part of the Natura 2000 network. Arsos community leader Yannis Yannakis said the meeting at the Limassol District Local Government Organisation is expected to be attended, among others, by Deputy Director of the Environment Department Elena Stylianopoulou and Environment Commissioner Ilias Myrianthous.
Development concerns
The meeting will focus on the environmental assessment and further steps regarding the project. The document is expected as part of the procedure for determining the impact of the planned development on the environment and the conditions under which it could be implemented.
In recent months, Trozena has been at the centre of controversy over plans to create a wellness complex. In May, the Limassol District Local Government Organisation ordered a halt to work requiring permits after an inspection found that work was being carried out without the necessary planning permit. Later, the organisation, in coordination with the Environment Department, asked the architects to submit a comprehensive master plan in order to assess the project as a whole.

In July, environmental organisation Terra Cypria said that work had allegedly continued without the necessary environmental and planning approvals. Yannakis denied this, saying construction was halted at the end of May and had not resumed.
Restoration of a historic bridge
At the same time, work is underway in the area to preserve a metal bridge from the British colonial period. According to Yannakis, the Arsos community asked the Limassol district administration to carry out maintenance on the structure: the deck has already been replaced, the bridge is being painted, and its foundations are also to be inspected. The road across the bridge has been temporarily closed.
Design work on a new bridge has also begun, as the existing structure is not suitable for heavier vehicles, including tourist buses. The location of the new crossing will be determined in accordance with current regulations, while the old metal bridge will be preserved as a historic site.
