Early parliamentary elections have begun in Malta — Malta Today
Early parliamentary elections began in Malta on Saturday. According to preliminary projections, the ruling Labour Party has the best chance of winning.
This is reported by the newspaper Malta Today.
According to the latest public opinion polls, the Labour Party, led by Robert Abela, can expect a comfortable majority in parliament, as was the case in 2013, 2017, and 2022.
Although six political parties are participating in the election, the Labour Party and the opposition centrist Nationalist Party have been the only ones to enter parliament since 1966, having surpassed the 5% vote threshold.
Abel ran a campaign focused on the strength of the economy, promising competence and stability, while his opponent—Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg—complained that the country’s strong economy had not led to an improvement in quality of life.
As of 2:00 p.m. local time, voter turnout stood at 43.59%. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, who is Maltese and a member of the Nationalist Party, also cast her vote.
The results are expected to be announced around noon on Sunday.
As a reminder, Malta continues to sell passports to Russians on sanctions lists.
