Lightning struck Polish climbers on Mont Blanc

Lightning struck Polish climbers on Mont Blanc

A complex rescue operation on Mont Blanc has been successfully completed, during which two Polish climbers who were caught in a storm and struck by lightning were rescued. Due to severe weather conditions, the evacuation had to be carried out via land, which significantly complicated the rescuers’ work. Fortunately, both climbers survived and received medical attention.

The incident occurred on June 2 while two Polish climbers were ascending the Zob Veleta peak in the Mont Blanc massif. Suddenly, the weather took a sharp turn for the worse, a thunderstorm broke out in the mountains, and during the storm, one of the men was struck by lightning. After that, the climbers were unable to continue the route on their own or descend safely.

Rescue services faced a serious challenge, as weather conditions prevented the use of a helicopter, significantly complicating the operation and forcing the teams to rely solely on ground-based efforts. Despite this, the climbers were able to descend partially on their own to a lower elevation and wait for rescuers in a safer area.

After midnight, both men were transported to the Torino mountain refuge, where a doctor examined them and assessed their condition. The climbers were subsequently evacuated to the town of Courmayeur for further medical examination and observation.

Rescuers note that such incidents in the mountains remain particularly dangerous due to sudden weather changes, which can turn a route into a deadly hazard zone in a matter of minutes. This was reported by AostaSera.
