Moderate Republicans are threatening Trump over the withdrawal of troops from Poland

A group of moderate Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives is threatening to block the passage of a major bill authorizing $88 billion in emergency spending. Lawmakers are demanding that the Donald Trump administration return U.S. troops to Poland

The initiative is led by Congressman Don Bacon (a Republican from Nebraska), who has consistently criticized the White House’s defense policy. He and his like-minded colleagues are trying to force the administration to reconsider its decision to abruptly withdraw 4,200 U.S. troops from Poland, which took place last month.

According to Bacon, the number of U.S. brigades in this key ally country has been reduced from five to three, which is a completely unsatisfactory outcome for collective security. Bacon’s position has already been openly supported by influential Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (a Republican from Pennsylvania), who is demanding official explanations from the Pentagon regarding the dismantling of a long-standing defense strategy in Europe.

This move poses serious problems for House Speaker Mike Johnson. Since Republicans hold a slim majority and Democrats planned to vote against the measure, the loss of even three Republican votes would completely block the initiative. The situation is further complicated by the fact that the funding bill includes not only funds to counter Iran but also critically important funding for U.S. agriculture and measures to combat the Ebola virus. This crisis reflects a deep rift between traditional Republican hawks, who advocate for a strong U.S. presence in Europe, and the Trump administration, which has been consistently reducing military troop levels to force European countries to fund their own security.

This is reported by Politico.

Poland has begun the official process of establishing a permanent U.S. military base on its territory. The government has already approved the decision, and the defense minister has been authorized to negotiate with the U.S. side and prepare the necessary infrastructure.

More than a thousand U.S. service members are leaving Lithuania following the completion of a scheduled rotation. At the same time, the arrival date and size of the next contingent remain undetermined, the country’s defense minister stated.
