Traffic jams form on South Korean highways during Chuseok — Korea Herald

Major highways in South Korea saw significant traffic jams on Friday morning as people set off on trips during the Chuseok holiday period. According to the Korea Expressway Corporation, as of 9:00 a.m., a drive from Seoul to Busan was expected to take 8 hours and 40 minutes, Korea Herald reports.

Travel times from Seoul

The expected travel time from Seoul to Ulsan was 8 hours and 20 minutes, to Daegu — 7 hours and 40 minutes, and to Mokpo — 6 hours and 40 minutes. Drivers heading to Gwangju were forecast to spend 6 hours and 10 minutes on the road, to Gangneung — 4 hours and 10 minutes, and to Daejeon — 3 hours and 50 minutes.

In the opposite direction, the trip from Busan to Seoul was expected to take 7 hours and 50 minutes, according to the corporation's calculations. Travel time to Seoul from Ulsan was estimated at 7 hours and 30 minutes, from Mokpo — 7 hours, and from Daegu and Gwangju — 6 hours and 50 minutes. The trip to Seoul from Gangneung was expected to take 3 hours and 30 minutes, and from Daejeon — 3 hours.

Traffic forecast for the day

The heaviest outbound traffic from Seoul was forecast between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., after which traffic was expected to gradually ease between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. The largest flow of vehicles toward the capital was expected from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; congestion was forecast to decrease at around 2:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. on Saturday.

The Korea Expressway Corporation expected about 6.84 million vehicles to travel across the country that day. Approximately 470,000 vehicles were expected to leave the Seoul metropolitan area, while another 460,000 were expected to travel toward it.
