Nasir Gawuna unlikely to return to Nigeria’s APC — Premium Times Nigeria
Nasir Gawuna, former deputy governor of Kano State and a 2023 gubernatorial candidate, is unlikely to return to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. This was reported by Premium Times Nigeria, citing his associate Badaru Umar.
Gawuna’s associates returned to the APC
On September 1, Umar, a former chairman of the Ungogo local government, led a delegation of Gawuna’s associates to a consultative meeting with Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf and his deputy, Murtala Garo. The delegation included, among others, the politician’s younger brother Mansur Gawuna and the deputy chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the state, Ali Datti-Yako.
On September 5, members of this group, together with some supporters, officially returned to the APC. This prompted speculation that Nasir Gawuna would also join the party, but according to Umar, they were unable to persuade him.

Possible Senate nomination
According to Umar, his group had previously moved with Gawuna to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and later to the NDC, hoping to secure a gubernatorial nomination for him. They failed to achieve this goal. Umar said that Gawuna insisted on remaining in the NDC, where he was offered a nomination as a Senate candidate for the Kano Central district.
In the 2023 Kano State gubernatorial election, Gawuna, as the APC candidate, received 890,705 votes but lost to Abba Yusuf, who received 1,019,602 votes. In September 2023, an election tribunal overturned Yusuf’s victory, but in January 2024, Nigeria’s Supreme Court overturned the lower courts’ rulings and upheld his victory.
