NATO Responds to U.S. Statements on Europe - Bloomberg

NATO officials state that despite strong signals from the United States regarding defense spending, the Alliance is not in crisis and continues to operate as planned. European countries are gradually increasing their military budgets, and within the organization, officials assure that all key objectives will be met without disruption. This is reported by Bloomberg.

The North Atlantic Alliance is trying to quell any talk of internal tensions, which have resurfaced following public statements by the U.S. administration. Officials there state outright that there is no systemic crisis between Europe and the U.S., and that all processes within NATO are proceeding as usual, without major disruptions or political breakdowns.

Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, emphasized that the Alliance has a clear defense planning mechanism that allows countries to gradually increase their capabilities and achieve agreed-upon goals. According to him, it is precisely this mechanism that guarantees that even ambitious spending requirements at the level of 5% of GDP will not remain merely on paper. “We have NATO’s defense planning process, which provides us with the necessary capabilities, and we will receive them in a timely manner,” stated Cavodragone, effectively attempting to ease tensions surrounding the issue of defense funding.

He also commented separately on recent incidents involving Russian drones that entered the airspace of Alliance countries. In his view, it is not worth reacting too emotionally to such incidents, as NATO has a more systematic approach to security and situation control.

His remarks came after U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hagset’s speech at the Asia Security Forum in Singapore, where Washington once again reminded its allies of the need to make difficult decisions in the defense sector. However, the U.S. side did not publicly specify the details of these demands, leaving room for various interpretations.

Despite this, NATO insists: The Alliance remains manageable and predictable, and its main strategy—the gradual strengthening of defense capabilities—remains unchanged even amid political statements from both sides of the Atlantic.

The U.S. plans to significantly reduce its military contribution to NATO by cutting back on the provision of key resources and equipment. Washington is effectively urging its European allies to take on a larger share of the defense burden sooner.
