NeurIPS reverses ban on contributions from sanctioned Chinese organizations

The international artificial intelligence conference NeurIPS has announced the cancellation of its earlier ban on submissions from organizations under US sanctions. This decision is crucial for maintaining global cooperation in AI research.

The ban affected over 800 Chinese companies and universities, including Huawei, SenseTime, Megvii, Hikvision, and SMIC. It was introduced earlier this week to comply with US law since the conference’s organizing body is based in California. The event is scheduled to take place in December in Sydney.

In response, the Chinese Association for Science and Technology (CAST) threatened to boycott NeurIPS, declaring it would stop funding Chinese researchers’ participation and redirect support to other international conferences unless the ban is lifted.

NeurIPS is one of the world's leading AI conferences, gathering top researchers, companies, and academic institutions annually to share knowledge. It plays a vital role in advancing AI technology.

The removal of the ban will preserve valuable international scientific dialogue and enable broad participation, promoting AI development globally.

This move is expected to encourage further easing of restrictions and the restoration of full collaboration among researchers worldwide.
