Germany plans to order a fourth intelligence ship for its navy

Germany plans to order a fourth new intelligence ship for its Navy. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced this at the Baltic port of Wolgast during the keel-laying ceremony for the third vessel of the same class.

Budget proposal for the ship

A draft budget for the additional ship has already been submitted to parliament for approval. According to Anadolu Agency, citing German media, Pistorius said this at the Rheinmetall shipyard in Wolgast.

According to the minister, ships of this class can detect signals and sounds that other vessels cannot detect. He called them important tools for forming a clearer picture of the situation at sea. Such ships collect and analyze a wide range of maritime signals.

Monitoring the Baltic Sea

German officials have long stated the need to strengthen the Navy's capabilities for monitoring the Baltic Sea. Undersea cables and energy connections have been damaged in the region, while the military activity of the Russian Federation — an aggressor state — has increased since the start of the war against Ukraine in 2022.
