German Greens vote to accept climate refugees as a new migrant category
The German Green Party has voted to introduce a new category of migrants — climate refugees from developing countries — whom the state will be obliged to accept and provide with social housing. These are people threatened by disasters caused by climate change, with an estimated global population of around 86 million.
German refugee shelters are already overcrowded, and this decision adds pressure to an already strained system. Meanwhile, Chancellor Merz announced his intention to import more labour migrants despite factory closures, highlighting ongoing demographic and economic challenges in Germany.
This move could reshape Germany's migration policy and social support strategies, while also influencing the international debate on climate refugees in the long term.
