The UN expects a new global temperature record in 2027 – The Guardian
The UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has warned that, due to the worsening climate crisis, a new annual heat record will almost certainly be set by 2030. According to experts, global temperatures could break previous records as early as 2027 due to the expected El Niño phenomenon.
This is reported by The Guardian.
Carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels continue to rise, trapping more heat and causing extreme weather events, including record-breaking heat in Europe and Asia. According to current estimates, global warming is already claiming one life every minute, and this figure will rise without a significant reduction in emissions. A report by the UK Met Office for the WMO predicts an 86% probability that at least one year between 2026 and 2030 will surpass 2024 as the hottest on record. There is a 75% probability that the average temperature over this five-year period will be more than 1.5°C higher than the pre-industrial average, posing a risk of more severe heatwaves, droughts, storms, and floods.
Simon Steell, head of the UN Climate Division, emphasized the need to accelerate the shift away from fossil fuels and toward clean energy, which is now cheaper and faster to produce. Achieving the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting warming to 1.5°C is currently unlikely, but the 2°C target remains achievable, as the probability of exceeding this level by 2030 is less than 1%. Rising temperatures will be driven by the El Niño weather phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean, which has a 96% probability of occurring between December 2026 and February 2027. Additionally, the report forecasts that the next five winters in the Arctic will be 2.8°C warmer than recent averages, and changes in precipitation are expected, with increased humidity in Northern Europe, the Sahel, Alaska, and Siberia, and drought in the Amazon.
The UN has also recognized the right of refugees to seek asylum due to global warming.
As a reminder, the Swiss Glacier Gris has confirmed the threat of global warming.
