South Africa toughens rhetoric in relations with the US — Daily Maverick

South African authorities, according to Daily Maverick, are moving from attempts to reach an agreement to a tougher public stance in relations with the United States amid Washington’s tariff and diplomatic pressure. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said that the country would not bow its head to the US, while International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola used more resolute rhetoric during a speech in Washington.

Washington’s accusations

Daily Maverick writes that the administration of US President Donald Trump has stepped up pressure on Pretoria, including through tariffs and claims regarding South Africa’s domestic policy.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that those responsible for actions Washington considers incitement to violence against minorities, racial discrimination, and land confiscation have no place in the United States. The names of South African senior officials to whom these claims apply have not been specified. The outlet questions the validity of these accusations.

US Ambassador Leo Bozell also criticized Ramaphosa for failing to meet the Trump administration’s demands, including those concerning the repeal of laws passed by parliament. International relations expert Kingsley Makhubela, cited by the outlet, said that such expectations would effectively require the South African president to violate his oath.

Pretoria’s position

According to the article’s author, Pretoria had previously sought to reduce tensions through trade arrangements, policy adjustments, proposals concerning critical minerals, and tariff relief. In Daily Maverick’s view, these steps did not change Washington’s approach.

The outlet also notes that South Africa has fewer levers of influence than Canada or European Union countries, given the vulnerability of its economy and the lack of a consolidated African position. The columnist believes that a policy of concessions has not produced results, and therefore the country’s leadership is showing readiness to defend its position more actively.

Political expectations

Daily Maverick points to assumptions that the Republican Party may lose at least one chamber of Congress in the midterm elections in November. According to the author, such a result could limit the Trump administration’s political opportunities until the end of the presidential term.
