The Magyar Party has nominated its candidate for the Hungarian presidency
The ruling Hungarian party “Tisa,” led by Prime Minister Péter Magyar, has nominated András Baku, a lawyer and former chief justice of the Supreme Court, as its candidate for the presidency. According to Magyar, the country needs such an expert as head of state to put Hungary back on the path to the rule of law.
András Baka has already agreed to run, and the vote in parliament—which appoints the president—is scheduled for August 11.
Baka previously served as a judge on the European Court of Human Rights (1991–2008), and in 2009 he became president of the Hungarian Supreme Court; however, he was dismissed early in 2011 for criticizing the judicial reforms of Viktor Orbán’s government.

The position of president became vacant following the early termination of Tamás Szujók’s term on July 20.
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that he supports lowering the voting age from 18 to 16. He proposed this change as part of preparations for the country’s new constitutional reform. According to the politician, today’s teenagers are knowledgeable enough to participate in shaping the country’s future.
