PDP selects Mohammed Nami as Niger State governorship candidate
Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Niger State has selected Mohammed Nami as its candidate for the 2027 governorship election. As Premium Times Nigeria reports, other party aspirants withdrew their candidacies and endorsed Nami.
Party decision
Aliyu Khalidu, chairman of the PDP chapter in Niger State, confirmed the decision. He described Nami as a person of honour, integrity and proven leadership qualities.
According to Khalidu, the decision of the other aspirants to leave the race in favour of Nami demonstrates their confidence in his ability to provide effective leadership for the state. The chapter chairman also stated that the candidate has the experience and skills necessary to lead Niger State with purpose.

PDP’s standing in the state
Khalidu expressed confidence that Nami’s selection would strengthen the party and help it mount strong competition in the 2027 election. He also stated that the PDP retains significant support in the country, and that his engagement with communities and residents of the state indicates that many voters are ready to support the party.
The PDP governed Niger State for 16 years after Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999. Abdulkadir Kure served as governor from 1999 to 2007, while Babangida Aliyu held the office from 2007 to 2015. Since then, the PDP has been in opposition, while the state government has been controlled by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
