Nigeria’s Vice President Shettima arrives in Angola for extraordinary African Union summit
Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Luanda, the capital of Angola, where he will represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.
As Premium Times Nigeria reports, Shettima was received by senior Angolan officials and members of the Nigerian delegation who were already in Luanda. They included Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of Defence Christopher Musa, Acting Chargé d’Affaires of Nigeria’s mission in Angola Maxi Ogbeide, Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and Attorney General and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi.
Topic of the extraordinary summit
The meeting is dedicated to strengthening conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms in Africa. Heads of state and government are to review existing conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms and consider practical response measures to emerging challenges in the areas of peace and security.

Participants are expected to discuss early warning and early response, preventive diplomacy, and coordination between the African Union, member states, and regional economic communities. They will also consider the role of the African Union Peace and Security Council, financing for peace and security in Africa, countering terrorism and violent extremism, as well as improving the effectiveness of the African Peace and Security Architecture and the African Governance Architecture.
Preparations for the leaders’ meeting
Before the meeting of heads of state and government, the 26th Extraordinary Session of the African Union Executive Council was held in Luanda, with the participation of foreign ministers and other senior officials from member states. Upon arrival, Shettima received a briefing from Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and representatives of the Nigerian mission on issues expected to be key at the summit.
