Beijing Xiangshan Forum brings together about 2,000 participants — ECNS
The 13th Beijing Xiangshan Forum on security issues is underway in Beijing, China. The event, which runs from Tuesday to Thursday, has brought together about 2,000 official representatives, scholars, experts and observers from nearly 100 countries, regions and international organizations, ECNS reports.
The forum's theme is “Building Consensus for Stability and Jointly Promoting Security Governance.” The report notes that the event marks the 20th anniversary of the forum’s establishment in 2006.
Principles of the forum’s work
Li Shuyun, director of the secretariat office of the Beijing Xiangshan Forum, stated that the platform provides an equal venue for countries regardless of their size, influence or economic status. According to her, over two decades the forum has sought to overcome differences through communication and develop international cooperation through inclusive dialogue.

Li also said that since its establishment, the forum has adhered to the principles of equality, openness, inclusiveness and mutual learning. In her view, this approach has strengthened the forum’s influence and its ability to facilitate consensus-building on issues of global stability.
Comments from participants
Jean-Christophe Baron von Pfetten, chairman of the British Royal Institute of East-West Strategic Studies, said that the forum promotes dialogue among participants to find solutions. Shaffdin Lutfi, senior director for comprehensive security at the Malaysian Institute of Defence and Security, noted that this format makes it possible to bring disputes up for discussion, manage differences and seek common interests.
Carlos Branco, former director for cooperation and regional security at NATO’s International Military Staff, stated that three of the five components of China’s Global Governance Initiative, in his assessment, correspond to the core provisions of the UN Charter: sovereignty, the international rule of law and multilateralism. Ahmed Al-Gharni, vice president of the Rasanah International Institute for Iranian Studies, said that China has long supported resolving issues through dialogue and consultations.
