Pellegrini called on the UN to prevent the normalization of war and violence

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini called on the international community to prevent war, violence, and violations of international law from becoming the norm in international relations. He emphasized the need to preserve diplomacy and uphold the UN Charter amid escalating global conflicts.

The Slovak president paid particular attention to Russia’s war against Ukraine, which is taking place near Slovakia’s borders.

“The war in Ukraine continues to wreak havoc near Slovakia’s borders. Attacks on civilian targets and critical infrastructure remain unacceptable. A ceasefire is still a long way off, and lasting peace is even further away. We must support every serious diplomatic effort that will help bring an end to Russia’s war against Ukraine and build a secure future for our neighbor,” Pellegrini emphasized.

The President of Slovakia highlighted the danger of a situation in which force gradually supplants international rules and diplomatic mechanisms.

According to him, if the world accepts that violence is an acceptable means of resolving political disputes, this will have consequences for future generations.

“There is an even deeper danger. If violence becomes the norm for the next generation, diplomacy itself will become more difficult. What is hard to resolve today may become impossible tomorrow,” the Slovak president warned.

Pellegrini noted that one of the most urgent tasks for world leaders is to stop violence, preserve diplomacy, and prevent current conflicts from becoming the norm.

Peter Pellegrini also stated that the weakening of international institutions and the shift from cooperation to confrontation are making the world more vulnerable.

He called on nations to return to compliance with the UN Charter and reject the approach whereby political problems are resolved through the use of force, the redrawing of borders, or the violation of sovereignty.

“Too many conflicts are still driven by the belief that political problems can be solved by force, by changing borders, by violating sovereignty, and by ignoring international rules. We must reject this logic. Leadership is not about a readiness to escalate; it requires the courage to de-escalate,” concluded Peter Pellegrini.

The President of Slovakia called on the UN and world leaders not to leave the next generation a world in which violence becomes the norm and diplomacy the exception.

Pellegrini made this statement during the general debate of the UN General Assembly.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki called on the international community to respond decisively, consistently, and collectively to the actions of Russia, which continues its war against Ukraine and conducts hybrid operations in Europe.

As a reminder, leaders of several Eastern European countries used their addresses at the UN General Assembly to publicly oppose Moscow’s policies. They also characterized the war in Ukraine as a threat to international peace and security, according to CNN.

In Turkey, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, during his address to the UN General Assembly, called for reform of the UN Security Council. He proposed ensuring fair representation of all regions of the world and abolishing the veto power of the Security Council’s permanent members.
