Germany's rearmament is causing tension among its allies — FT
Germany's plan to significantly boost its defense capabilities is causing concern among its European partners, despite widespread recognition of the need for such measures.
The Financial Times reports on this.
Berlin has unveiled a new defense strategy that calls for a significant increase in military spending and a stronger German role in European security amid new threats and waning support from the U.S.
By the end of the decade, the country’s defense spending is expected to exceed 3.5% of GDP, with the annual budget potentially reaching around 190 billion euros.
At the same time, France and Poland are expressing concern not so much about the growth of Germany’s military power itself, but rather its implications for Europe’s defense industry and the balance of influence.
In particular, there are fears that Berlin’s massive spending could entrench dependence on American weapons and strengthen the position of the German defense sector without an equitable distribution of benefits among EU countries.
There are also continuing differences between Berlin and Paris regarding approaches to defense policy. France advocates for greater strategic autonomy for Europe, while Germany more often relies on NATO and cooperation with the United States.
Despite this, Berlin emphasizes the importance of deterrence against new threats and declares its readiness for closer cooperation with partners, particularly France.
Analysts note that the increase in Germany’s defense spending could shift the balance of power in European security and intensify competition in the defense industry.
Germany recently transferred three cogeneration units to Ukraine for the Chernihiv region, which are intended to ensure a stable supply of heat and electricity. This equipment will be able to meet the needs of tens of thousands of residents and the city’s critical infrastructure.
Germany is expanding its military exchange program and actively involving Ukrainian instructors with real combat experience in the training of Bundeswehr units to adapt its army to the conditions of modern warfare. Ukrainian military personnel are already working at key training schools and sharing the practical skills they gained on the front lines.
