Previous launch from Wonsan
Less than two weeks earlier, on September 20, North Korea also launched two short-range ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea. According to the South Korean military, they flew approximately 450 and more than 600 kilometers, respectively.
The new launch took place the day after a statement by Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, about Pyongyang's intention to permanently sever ties with Seoul. She also rejected South Korean Unification Minister Chung Dong-young's proposal to hold talks on the military demarcation line.
