Benue State police in Nigeria confirm receiving letter from Obi's party
In Nigeria's Benue State, police confirmed receiving a letter from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) party about the planned visit of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi. Premium Times Nigeria reports that the letter to the state police commissioner was dated September 7, 2026, and police confirmed receiving it on the same day.

The letter was signed by NDC Benue State chairman Ohini Ojeigbe. The document stated that Obi was to arrive in Makurdi at about 8:00 a.m. on September 8, before travelling to Yelwata to meet families and representatives of the community affected during the 2025 mass killing.
The candidate also planned to visit the memorial, pay tribute to the victims and lay a wreath. According to the letter, Obi and his entourage were to leave Yelwata and Benue State before noon. The party asked police to provide security for the candidate and his delegation.

Police and authorities' position
Police Superintendent Daniel Tarwa confirmed to the publication that law enforcement officers had received the letter from the NDC and provided Obi with security. The document bears a receipt mark signed by Tarwa.
Earlier, Obi's visit to Benue was disrupted after people whom Premium Times Nigeria described as suspected political thugs blocked the convoy from entering the state. Kula Tersoo, a representative of Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia, said that neither the governor nor the state government had been informed about the trip, so security measures had not been prepared in advance. The publication notes that the released letter and the police confirmation contradict the state authorities' earlier statement that security services had not been informed.
