Police say two detainees wounded during attack in Islamabad — Dawn

In Islamabad, Pakistan, two handcuffed suspects were wounded during an attack by armed men on a police team. Police said the attackers tried to free the detainees but fled the scene.

Attack on police vehicle

As Dawn reports, a group of six law enforcement officers was escorting two suspects after recovering a motorcycle and a mobile phone. Police took them to a location in the Sharifabad area, which it described as their hideout, to search for stolen items.

According to law enforcement officials, as the police vehicle was returning to the station, it was intercepted by four men on two motorcycles. The attackers opened fire on the police officers and ordered the detainees to flee, police claim.

The police officers took cover behind their service vehicle and fired into the air in response. According to law enforcement officials, the two detainees sustained gunshot wounds from the attackers' fire. They were taken to hospital, while the gunmen fled. A case over the incident was registered at the Korral police station.

Robbery investigation

The detainees had previously been arrested in a robbery case which, according to police, occurred on August 30 in an area under the jurisdiction of the Korral police station. The case was registered under Article 392 of the Pakistan Penal Code based on a complaint by Adib Ali.

Police said that two motorcyclists stopped Adib Ali in Sharifabad, threatened him with weapons, and took his motorcycle, two mobile phones and 374,000 Pakistani rupees. After the court authorized the suspects' detention, they were questioned and agreed to assist in finding the stolen property.
