Half of Germans no longer consider their country safe
Following the Islamist terrorist attack carried out during the Berlin Pride parade, about four in ten Germans began to feel less safe. At the same time, 51% of those surveyed disagreed with the statement that Germany is a stable and safe country.
Following the attack in Berlin, Germans’ sense of security has changed noticeably. This is evidenced by a new survey by the public opinion research institute Civey, commissioned by the Funke Media Group. According to Welt, about four in ten Germans said they feel less safe following the attack.
At the same time, for the majority of those surveyed, the situation has not changed. 54% of respondents said their personal sense of security remained the same. Another 7% said they feel definitely or somewhat safer than before. Another 1% was unable to answer this question.
What Germans Think About the Country’s Security
Survey participants were also asked to what extent they agreed with the statement: “Germany is a stable and safe country.” The results were almost evenly split, but with a slight majority of those who disagreed with the statement. 51% of respondents aged 18 and older said they definitely or somewhat did not consider Germany to be a stable and safe country.
At the same time, 37% of those surveyed fully or largely agreed that the country is stable and safe. Another 12% of participants were undecided. Thus, more than half of those surveyed do not share the view that Germany is a stable and safe country today.
How the Survey Was Conducted
The survey was conducted by the Civey Institute on behalf of the Funke Media Group. Between July 28 and 30, researchers surveyed 5,000 German citizens. All respondents participated in the survey online.
The results show that, following the high-profile attack, the issue of security remains important to German society, and a significant portion of citizens no longer perceive the country as completely safe. This was reported by *Welt*.
