Former Italian Higher Education Minister Fabio Mussi dies
Former Italian Minister of Higher Education and Research Fabio Mussi died overnight at Rome's Sant'Eugenio hospital. He was 78. The Alliance of Greens and Left, to which he belonged, announced the politician's death, ANSA English reports.
Work in government and parliament
Mussi was a minister in Romano Prodi's second government in 2006–2008. He was also a member of the Italian parliament from 1992 to 2008.
The politician was a member of the Italian Communist Party. In parliament, he represented its two successor political formations — the Democratic Party of the Left and the Democrats of the Left.

Political and journalistic activity
In 2007, the majority of the Democrats of the Left merged with the centrist Daisy party, forming the center-left Democratic Party. Mussi did not join the new formation and helped create the left-wing political force SD, which later became SEL and subsequently the Italian Left party.
In addition to his political activities, Mussi worked as a journalist. He was deputy editor of Rinascita and co-editor of the newspaper L'Unità.
