Playwright and writer Bonnie Greer dies aged 77
British-American playwright, writer and political commentator Bonnie Greer, who spent most of her adult life in the United Kingdom, has died at the age of 77. Her husband, David Hutchins, announced her death in a statement to British media. According to Deutsche Welle, she died after a short illness.
Statement by her husband
Hutchins described his wife as an acclaimed playwright, author, critic, cultural and political commentator. He said that her intellect, courage and distinctive voice made a lasting contribution to the cultural and public life of the United Kingdom.
He also said that those close to her would remember Greer for her warmth, humour, generosity and exceptional ability to bring people together. The couple married in 1993, seven years after she moved to the United Kingdom.

Theatre and public activity
Bonnie Greer was born in Chicago in 1948. She studied theatre in her hometown before moving to New York, where she began her writing career. She settled in the United Kingdom in 1986 and acquired British citizenship in 1997.
In the United Kingdom, Greer worked primarily in theatre with women and members of ethnic minorities. She wrote radio plays broadcast by the BBC, as well as musicals. Her 1993 play “Munda Negra,” about the mental health issues of Black women, won the Verity Bargate Award for best play.
Greer regularly took part in public and political debates in the United Kingdom and appeared on the programmes Newsnight and Question Time. She supported Barack Obama and opposed Brexit and Donald Trump’s first presidential term in the United States. She was also president of the Brontë Society, chancellor of Kingston University in London, a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and served on the boards of the Royal Opera House and the London Film School.
