NPP candidate’s aide criticizes government’s reliance on opposition information — MyJoyOnline

In Ghana, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a senior aide to a candidate from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), said that the government would demonstrate helplessness if it relied on the opposition to obtain information to counter illegal drug trafficking. MyJoyOnline reports.

Possible questioning of NPP members

Aboagye’s statement followed comments by Rashid Tanko-Computer, deputy director for elections and information technology of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He said that security services could invite certain NPP members to provide additional information regarding allegations of drug-related activities.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story program on September 22, Aboagye said that security agencies should approach anyone who may possess information to resolve the issue. At the same time, he stressed that the government should not rely on an opposition party in the fight against drug trafficking.

Criticism of NDC representative

Aboagye also questioned the way Tanko-Computer announced the possible invitations of NPP representatives. In his opinion, those words were threatening in nature. He added that national security services are state institutions, not organizations controlled by the NDC.

According to the NPP candidate’s aide, law enforcement officers can verify information received from opposition politicians, religious figures, traditional leaders, and other people if it helps the investigation. He noted that the goal should be to restore Ghana’s reputation amid concerns over recent drug trafficking-related cases.

Aboagye added that the government’s reliance on the opposition for such information would, in his opinion, raise questions about the authorities’ ability to counter this problem independently.
