An amendment to the Hungarian Constitution has been signed: Orbán will no longer be able to lead the government

Hungarian President Tamás Szujok signed a constitutional amendment that limits the term of office for the prime minister to a maximum of eight years, even if the terms were not consecutive.

The new rules apply to all politicians who have served as head of government since 1990. As a result, former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who was in power for a total of 16 years, will be barred from returning to the office of prime minister.

The Hungarian Parliament previously approved the relevant bill by a majority vote. Once signed by the president, the document will take effect upon its official publication.

Sujók himself stated that such a provision is quite rare in both European and global political practice.
