The German Ambassador to Moldova has been accused of promoting Russian narratives

Hubert Knirsch, the German ambassador to Moldova, found himself at the center of a scandal following an interview in which he commented on a possible unification of Moldova with Romania.

During the interview, the diplomat stated that the decision on unification should be made by the citizens of both countries, and also noted that he does not agree with the assertion that Moldova and Romania share a common language and religion.

His remarks sparked a sharp reaction in Moldova and Romania. Former Romanian President Traian Băsescu sharply criticized the diplomat, while representatives of political forces advocating for the unification of the two countries stated that such statements echo Russian narratives.

Knirsch himself insisted that his words had been mistranslated. The German Foreign Ministry emphasized that Berlin’s official position is that the issue of a possible unification can be decided only by Moldova and Romania as sovereign states.

The Romanian Embassy in Chisinau, for its part, stated that claims denying the two countries’ shared history, language, and cultural heritage are unfounded.

As a reminder, the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned its citizens about heightened checks, interrogations lasting several hours, and instances of coercion to sign contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense when attempting to enter Russian territory.

Moldova wants to use peace talks with Russia to reclaim Transnistria.
